DragonForce guitarists Sam Totman and Herman Li were interviewed by Sam Stewart-Panko when the band played Toronto on October 20. Astute metal fans will recognize that last name, but maybe not the first name; that’s because Sam Stewart-Panko is the nine-year-old son of prominent metal journalist Kevin Stewart-Panko, and a major DragonForce fan. And his questions weren’t any dumber than his dad’s would have been! You can read the full interview at Hellbound.ca, but here’s a sample:

How do you think up your lyrics?
Sam: Umm. Good question. I guess the first thing is that the vocal and melody lines have to fit. We write the music first and they have to fit that. When you listen to a song, you can get a feel and think, “Well, that song could be about that” and you get a picture in your head of something it might be and you try and write some lyrics about that.
Herman: They have to fit the atmosphere of the song; like if it’s a dark song or a happy, uplifting or triumphant song. For this new album, we actually had all the topics written for each song so we made sure not to repeat lyrics and themes. This time around, we might even be able to explain to people what the songs are about because sometimes we feel that people get confused and think all the songs are just about dragons and warriors.

After we finished asking DragonForce bassist Frédéric Leclerq and drummer Dave Mackintosh serious questions about the band’s new vocalist and upcoming studio album, we asked them five more questions about stuff like road food, clothes, and national stereotypes. Here are their answers on those subjects, and a few others as well. Enjoy!

As reported in our recent video interview with bassist Frederic Leclerq and drummer Dave Mackintosh, DragonForce are currently working on a new studio album which will be out sometime in early 2012.

LithiumMagazine.com sent writer/photographer Mike Bax to DragonForce‘s performance at the Toronto Opera House on Thursday, October 20 – their first North American show with new vocalist Marc Hudson, since the band had to cancel their planned October 18 Los Angeles gig – and a full review and some terrific photos can be seen at this link.

Bax writes, “Because of this L.A. cancellation, what Toronto wound up getting was the very first North American appearance of DragonForce with their new vocalist in place. Even with his self-admitted problematic vocals this evening, the eight songs performed all sounded tip-top, and Hudson makes an almost seamless fit with the band, stepping into the shoes left vacant by ex-vocalist ZP Theart almost two years ago…He pushed out vocals to old tracks like ‘Heroes of Our Time’ and ‘Through the Fire and Flames’ with as much confidence as the two new tracks (‘Cry Thunder’ and ‘Lost Fallen World’) performed.”

Due to circumstances beyond their control, DragonForce have been forced to cancel their sold-out show at Los Angeles’ Troubadour on Tuesday, Oct. 18. The show would have been the US live debut of brand new singer Marc Hudson. However, upon his arrival in LA on Saturday evening, he fell ill, contracting a virus which is preventing him from performing. Hudson made the valiant effort to try and salvage the show, consulting with a doctor last night for the final time. He was told that there was no way he could possibly perform in his condition.

The band is incredibly frustrated to come all this way, only to be tripped at the last minute. DragonForce extends its apologies to all the LA fans they were looking forward to playing for but the situation is completely and entirely out of their control.

The band’s Toronto and New York City performances slated for later this week should go on as planned.
